It's Time to Try Clean Deodorant

Chances are, you’ve heard about the potential risks of using antiperspirants that contain the active ingredient aluminum. Aluminum reduces underarm wetness by blocking sweat ducts and minimizes body odor by inhibiting the bacteria that feed on sweat and cause it. Problem is, “aluminum powder is also a toxicant at high doses,” says Merryfield Clean Council member and clean beauty expert Mia Davis. “While studies on the risk of small, daily exposures are mixed, we think it is best to avoid it, especially on this sensitive area.” Here, she shares a few more tips about choosing a clean deodorant:

What’s the best way to choose a natural deodorant? Deodorant is one of those highly subjective products. Someone will swear by the performance of one natural deodorant, but it may make me smell worse than not wearing a deodorant at all! And some people don’t mind a paste where others really want a spray. So if the first one you try isn’t for you, don’t give up. Try another format. The good news is you have more options than ever.

Does your body need time to adjust to using natural deodorant? Anecdotally, we hear from friends and brands, and we can even self-report that sometimes it can take a body a week or more to adjust to a new, natural deodorant, especially if you’re making the switch from a conventional high-powder antiperspirant.
