How Nuts Help You Stay Fit

Caroline Del Col

Rich in monounsaturated fat and high in calories, nuts might not be the first thing you think of when it comes to staying in shape. But new research shows that eating nuts can be key to preventing weight gain.

In a study published in the journal BMJ Nutrition, Prevention, and Health, researchers crunched the data from questionnaire responses on dietary habits, physical activity, and weight changes from about 145,000 middle-aged and older men and women. Those respondents who went from never eating nuts to eating a daily average of at least half a serving (about half a handful) were 16 percent less likely to become obese over a four-year period compared with people who avoided nuts altogether.

Opting for a half serving of nuts per day instead of red meat, processed meat, desserts, French fries or potato chips was also linked with less weight gain. Scientists theorize that because nuts have satiating protein and fiber, you’ll feel fuller longer after eating them as compared to other snacks. In addition, about 20 percent of calories from nuts will be excreted from your body and not count toward your calorie total.

If you’re looking for some nutty snacks, JUSTIN’S® has you covered: From organic nut butters to chocolate covered almonds, their products are clean and delicious. Find them all at Merryfield.
